84, Charing Cross Road (Helene Hanff)

En 1970, Helene Hanff a conquis le coeur de nombreux lecteurs dans le monde entier en publiant la correspondance qu'elle a échangé pendant vingt ans avec Frank Doel, directeur de la librairie "The Marks Bookshop", située 84, Charing Cross road à Londres.

In 1970, Helene Hanff won the heart of many readers all over the world by publishing the correspondence she exchanged during twenty years with Frank Doel, director of "The Marks Bookshop", 84, Charing Cross road, London.

New yorkaise, elle entre en contact, en 1949, avec cette librairie à la recherche de titres épuisés et établit une amitié épistolaire avec tous les employés de la librairie. Elle et Frank ont commencé par s'écrire "Dear Madam" et "Dear Sir", mais au bout de vingt ans, c'était devenu "My dear Helene" et "Frankie".  Passionnée par la ville de Londres, pendant toutes ces années, elle essaiera en vain d'y aller. Elle raconte sa vie à New York. Elle est horrifiée quand elle découvre le rationnement alimentaire de l'Angleterre d'après-guerre et se met à envoyer des colis de nourriture. En échange, le personnel de la librairie lui envoie des premières éditions de ses poètes préférés et de belles nappes brodées par la voisine de Frank Denoel. 

Un film en a été tiré en 1984 avec Anne Bancroft, Anthony Perkins, Judi Dench et Maurice Denham.

Elle a aussi écrit The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street, dont l'objet est le voyage à Londres qu'elle entreprend pour la première fois à l'âge de cinquante-quatre ans, alors que Frank Doel est décédé.

J'ai trouvé dans ce livre la même passion que moi pour la ville de Londres. J'ai la chance d'y avoir passé un an et de pouvoir y retourner: je vais régulièrement à Charing Cross road acheter des livres d'occasion, mais cette fois-ci, au mois d'août...    

She is a New Yorker and, in 1949, she contacts this bookshop in London in order to find some out of print books. There follows of long exchange of letters with all the employees of the bookshop. The letters she exchanges with Frank were formal at first: "Dear Madam', "Dear Sir" and in the end they addressed each other as "My dear Helen" and "Frankie". She has a passion for London and during her whole life, she will try to go there, but she will not manage. She is appalled when she discovers the food shortages in London after the war and she starts sending them food.

There has been a film in 1984 with Anne Bancroft, Anthony Perkins, Judi Dench and Maurice Denham.

She also wrote The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street, in which she tells the trip she finally took to London when she was 54 and Frank had died.  

I found in these two books the passion I feel for London. I am lucky enough to have spent a whole year there and I regularly go back. I am used to going to Charing Cross Road to buy second-hand books, but this time, in August...
