Londres - Promenade le long des docks #1
2 mai 2014
Docklands walk part one
At the end of March, beginning of April, I was in London and I haven't had time to tell you yet, so here we go...because better late than never.
London like you never saw it before. We won't take that bus although it is tempting, isn't it? For us today it is a walk that starts at Tower Hill and finishes at Canary Warf. It is divided into two parts.
In the first part of this walk, you will see old docks that were built in the 19th century when London was the busiest port in the world and that are now elegant marinas surrounded by awfully expensive blocks of flats (I mean, not for me... sadly. Can you see those penthouses with the huge windows on the top floor? oh la la). Here, at St Katherine docks, you could believe yourself at the seaside.
But around a corner, the view reminds us that we are in London.
All along the walk, stairs take you down to the river. The high tide leaves a thin and very slippery carpet of sea weeds.
You will pass Raine's Charity School, dating from 1719 with its two original figures of a charity boy and girl on the outside.
You will pass Turner's Old Star, a pub thought to have been owned by the painter Turner. He was drawn to this area because of the quality of the light.
Crime was a major problem in this part of London and it resulted in the foundation here of the first police service -The Marine Police Force- in 1798. The original forces used rowing boats to patrol the Thames and catch the River Pirates.
The walk ends beautifully at Captain Kidd pub. The table near the window was available, how lucky we were. It was a Tuesday and Tuesday lunchtime is the least busy time of the week.
A good beer (for Mr.LPC) and a plate of fish and chips for each of us, in front of a beautiful panaramic view over the Thames, there is nothing like it for me.
