Histoire d' escabeau

The story of a ladder

Here is the story of the ladder that stands in my back yard.

A story I had not heard about until now.

It was the 6th of June 1944 in Carentan, Normandy.

The ladder was set against the wall in my husband's grandfather's back yard.

His name was Gustave, and he used to pass wood over the wall to give it to the neighbour. That was the purpose of the ladder.

There was another ladder on the other side of the wall.

It was 2:30 in the afternoon, my husband's grandmother was at home with her son, who was 13 then.

They saw (American) planes arrive and the child thought they were beautiful.

The neighbour thought that they were dropping papers, before he realized they were bombs.

A neighbourhood house was destroyed and there was an enormous cloud of dust.

In a panic, my husband's grandmother and her son climbed this ladder and, who knows how, managed to go over that wall that was well over 2 yards high. It was a miracle.

There was a shelter on the other side of the wall.

Cet escabeau leur a sauvé la vie!

This ladder saved their lives.
